UK pubs will stay open until 2AM during key World Cup matches, as the government approves extended licensing hours to support fans, boost business, and enhance matchday atmosphere.
UK football fans will be able to celebrate late into the night during the upcoming FIFA World Cup, as the government has officially approved extended pub opening hours until 2AM for key matchdays.
According to reports from The Sun, the decision allows pubs across England and Scotland to serve drinks later than usual, creating a more vibrant and uninterrupted matchday experience for supporters.
UK Government Approves Extended Pub Hours for World Cup
The policy was led by Shabana Mahmood, who had earlier proposed relaxing standard licensing laws during matches involving home nations.
The plan, first reported in February, aimed to remove traditional closing restrictions so fans could enjoy matches and celebrations without disruption. The proposal has now been formally approved and will be implemented during the World Cup.
Government officials stated that the move will not only enhance the fan experience but also support the hospitality sector and strengthen community spirit during one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
How the New Rules Work
Under the newly announced regulations:
* For matches kicking off between 5PM and 9PM, pubs can extend alcohol service by up to 2 extra hours, with last orders pushed back to 1AM
* For later matches starting between 9PM and 10PM, pubs can serve alcohol until 2AM
The extended hours will apply to up to 13 matches that could involve England or Scotland during the tournament.
Importantly, pubs will **not need to apply for special licenses**, simplifying the process and allowing businesses to fully benefit from the increased demand.
Boost for Hospitality Industry and Local Communities
This marks the first time in nearly a decade that pubs have been granted extended hours for major tournament stages such as the Round of 32, Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final, should home nations qualify.
Similar measures were previously introduced during major events like the UEFA European Championships and the Women’s Euros.
Shabana Mahmood stated:
“As long as our teams are competing, we want fans to stay and support them in pubs. We’re making sure celebrations don’t end before the final whistle—or the final penalty.”
Industry Leaders Welcome the Decision
Hospitality leaders have strongly welcomed the move, highlighting its potential to boost revenue and employment.
Emma McClarkin, Chief Executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, said pubs are the best place for fans to gather and support their teams, adding that extended hours will strengthen community spirit during a “summer of sport.”
Meanwhile, Kate Nicholls, head of UKHospitality, described the World Cup as the highlight of the summer, predicting packed venues filled with passionate supporters.
Business groups also noted that longer opening hours will help:
* Increase revenue for pubs and bars
* Support jobs in the hospitality sector
* Maintain matchday atmosphere long after the final whistle
World Cup Atmosphere Set to Peak in the UK
With relaxed licensing rules now confirmed, UK fans can look forward to a full matchday experience—watching multiple games, celebrating together, and enjoying extended nightlife during the World Cup.
The decision reflects the government’s broader effort to balance **sports culture, economic growth, and community engagement**, ensuring that football fans won’t have to leave early—no matter how late the drama unfolds.
