According to Argentine media outlet TyC Sports, during Inter Miami CF’s 2-0 win over Portland Timbers in MLS, Lionel Messi could not hide his anger after insulting chants broke out from the stands, responding with an obscene gesture toward the crowd.
Late in the match between Inter Miami and Portland, fans began singing a well-known chant from Argentine football culture. However, the song is usually heard only when a team is performing terribly or losing matches badly, making its use in a comfortable 2-0 victory seem completely out of place.
According to Argentine reports, the chant was sung to the melody of Bonnie Tyler’s song It's a Heartache, with lyrics roughly meaning: “Players, you bunch of idiots, show some courage — none of you can beat anyone!”
The scene reportedly left Messi shocked and furious. He immediately responded by making a clear gesture with his right hand to express his displeasure. Meanwhile, Rodrigo De Paul pointed at the championship star on the team’s badge — representing last season’s MLS title — signaling that the fans should support the team rather than insult them.
The tension between Messi and the supporters eventually eased only after the final whistle confirmed Inter Miami’s victory.
