However, the conversation ended quickly after Guardiola made it clear that he plans to step away from football for at least a year once his time at City comes to an end.

Italy are not the only country interested in bringing Guardiola into international management. Several other national teams have also approached his representatives in recent weeks, although each inquiry has received the same response regarding his intention to take a sabbatical. Even so, some federations are reportedly prepared to wait, believing Guardiola's long-term vision and proven success could justify delaying their serch for a permanent manager. The Netherlands and England have both been liked with the Spanish coach, though neither situation appears likely to develop in the immediate future.

The Italian federation has faced several challenges in its serch for a new coach following Gennaro Gattuso's departure after the team's failed World Cup playoff campaign.
