Italy have officially reappointed Roberto Mancini as head coach, marking his return to the national team four years after his previous spell came to an end. The Italian Football Federation believes the experienced manager is the ideal figure to guide the Azzurri through a crucial rebuilding phase, with federation president Giovanni Malagò describing him as the strongest available candidate. At the same time, Claudio Ranieri has been appointed as the new technical director following the unexpected departure of Paolo Maldini.

Mancini previously managed Italy from 2018 to 2023, leading the team to UEFA Euro 2020 glory before stepping down in 2023 to accept the Saudi Arabia national team job. Although his first tenure included the disappointment of missing the 2022 FIFA World Cup, his success on the international stage and extensive coaching experience ultimately convinced the federation to bring him back. Since leaving Italy, Mancini has also coached Al Sadd in Qatar, further adding to his managerial résumé.

Before Mancini's appointment, former World Cup winner Andrea Pirlo had emerged as a leading contender for the position. However, concerns surrounding his association with a Russian betting company prompted the federation to reconsider its plans. The disagreement over Pirlo's candidacy led to the resignations of Paolo Maldini and team advisor Leonardo, both of whom had strongly supported his appointment. Federation officials emphasized that the decision was made to protect the integrity of the national team rather than because of internal conflict.

Italy now enters another transitional period after Gennaro Gattuso stepped down following the team's World Cup playoff defeat to Bosnia-Herzegovina, a result that condemned the Azzurri to missing a third consecutive FIFA World Cup. With Mancini back in charge and Ranieri overseeing technical development, the federation hopes the experienced leadership duo can restore stability, rebuild confidence, and return Italy to the top level of international football.
