Liverpool have completed the signing of Barcelona defender Ronald Araújo on a season-long loan, adding an experienced and versatile option to their defensive ranks. The agreement does not include a loan fee, while Liverpool will cover the Uruguay international’s wages for the campaign. The deal also contains an option for the Premier League club to make the transfer permanent next summer for around €55 million. Araújo has accepted a lower salary to help facilitate the move and will wear the No. 33 shirt at Anfield.

The 27-year-old arrives after experiencing a difficult period at Barcelona, where his role became increasingly limited over the past two seasons. Despite making 213 first-team appearances for the Catalan club, Araújo started only 16 matches in all competitions last season as other defenders moved ahead of him in the pecking order. Injuries, inconsistent form and personal struggles contributed to his reduced involvement, but Liverpool see him as a player capable of immediately competing for a first-team role. His previous experience at the highest level also makes him an attractive addition to a squad dealing with defensive absences.

Araújo’s versatility could be particularly valuable for Liverpool, as he is capable of playing both centre-back and right-back. His physical presence and ability to handle demanding one-on-one situations give the club another option alongside captain Virgil van Dijk. Liverpool have also been dealing with injuries affecting Joe Gomez, Giovanni Leoni, Jérémy Jacquet and Conor Bradley, while Ibrahima Konaté departed for Real Madrid on a free transfer. Araújo’s ability to operate in multiple defensive positions should therefore provide greater depth and tactical flexibility throughout the season.

The move also represents an opportunity for Araújo to revive his career after several challenging seasons in Spain. He joined Barcelona’s reserve side from Boston River in 2018 and developed into an important figure, playing a major role in the club’s 2022-23 LaLiga title campaign and becoming part of the leadership group. He has earned 27 international caps for Uruguay and remains highly regarded despite his recent setbacks. Liverpool are not finished in the transfer market either, with the club continuing to prioritize a wide forward and reportedly monitoring Paris Saint-Germain players Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye as they look to strengthen their squad further.
