The Italian Football Federation must select five stadiums, which will join the venues provided by Turkey to form the host list for the 2032 European Championship.

Italian media reports that Milan, the city with one of the deepest football traditions in Italy and home to two of the country’s most successful and globally renowned clubs, may not be included among the host cities for Euro 2032. Many hope this scenario will be avoided, but plans regarding Milan’s stadium project have raised concerns within the Italian Football Federation, and it is still not guaranteed that Milan will be one of Italy’s five selected host cities.

The outdated San Siro (Stadio Giuseppe Meazza) has already been ruled out, meaning all attention is now focused on the highly controversial new San Siro project. The project itself has not changed, but the key issue is the timeline. UEFA requires the new stadium to be completed by June 2031, and the schedule must be strictly followed. Even the smallest delay could have a decisive impact on Milan’s bid, potentially bringing either positive or negative consequences.

The entire process still has a long way to go, with many obstacles ahead. The proposal must first be submitted, followed by the implementation plan, public consultation, and environmental impact studies before final approval can be granted. Construction is not expected to begin until 2028.

Milan and the new San Siro project must accelerate progress, as the Italian Football Federation will submit Italy’s five candidate cities and stadiums to UEFA on October 1. At that stage, additional backup options may also be included.
