Newcastle United have reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Manchester City to sign Nico Gonzalez for a total package worth £50 million. The deal is understood to include a £47 million guaranteed fee plus another £3 million in potential bonuses. The 24-year-old midfielder has already been given permission to travel to Newcastle as the final stages of the transfer move forward.

Gonzalez joined Manchester City from Porto in January 2025 but has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter at the Etihad Stadium. He has made 54 appearances for the club and scored four goals, including an important winner in the FA Cup semi-final against Southampton in April. However, his limited opportunities have made a summer departure increasingly likely, with his absence from City's most recent match against Bournemouth further highlighting his uncertain position.

Newcastle see Gonzalez as an important solution to their midfield problems after losing Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali to Arsenal and Tottenham respectively. Their departures have left the squad short of experienced central midfielders, forcing manager Matthias Jaissle to rely on younger options such as 18-year-old Sean Steur and 20-year-old Lewis Miley in the recent 2-2 draw against Liverpool. Gonzalez would provide additional quality and experience while giving Newcastle more depth in a demanding season.

The move would also represent another major investment from Newcastle during an ambitious summer transfer window. Their spending is set to pass £200 million after the arrival of Gonzalez, with Lukas Hornicek, Ewen Jaouen, Bazoumana Toure, Aladji Bamba, Amar Dedic and Sean Steur also joining the squad. With Anthony Gordon moving to Barcelona for £75 million, Newcastle are reshaping their team significantly, and Gonzalez could become one of the most important additions as the club looks to strengthen its midfield and compete at a higher level.
