According to Chronicle Newcastle United reporter Lee Ryder, Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has admitted that the squad for the 2026-27 season is still incomplete.

Following the arrival of Nico Gonzalez, Jaissle hopes the club will continue strengthening the squad before the transfer window closes. Newcastle are reportedly looking to sign a left-back and another striker.

Before Newcastle's 3-2 League Cup victory over West Bromwich Albion, the club officially unveiled new signing Nico Gonzalez at St James' Park. The Spanish midfielder will wear the No. 6 shirt and is expected to occupy one of the two defensive midfield positions.

However, Newcastle's transfer business is not yet finished. Jaissle is understood to want additional cover at left-back, as well as another striker. Nick Woltemade is currently struggling for form and confidence, while William Osula suffered an injury in training and will undergo further assessment by a specialist.

When asked whether there were still areas of the squad that needed strengthening, Jaissle gave a direct answer: "Yes."

However, he refused to reveal which positions needed reinforcements, saying: "That's something I won't tell you."

Jaissle did make it clear that he would continue pushing sporting director Ross Wilson to make further signings before the deadline: "But I push every day."

The Chronicle had previously reported that Osula is expected to be sidelined for several weeks, further increasing the likelihood of Newcastle bringing in another striker.

Speaking about Osula's injury, Jaissle said: "It's very likely that he will be out for a few weeks. I don't want to go into too much detail. He will have further examinations with a specialist, and then we will provide an update."

Meanwhile, Newcastle's £50 million deal for Nico Gonzalez has given Jaissle further confidence heading into the final stages of the transfer window. The 24-year-old may still be relatively young, but he already has considerable experience and could make his debut against Tottenham on Saturday evening.

Discussing the new signing, Jaissle said: "We are really happy that we finally brought him here. It was a long pursuit. We want to continue following our path of being brave and giving young, talented players opportunities. Nico is young, but at the same time he is very experienced, so he fits us very well."

"He can bring a lot of quality to the team, and we can't wait to see him on the pitch."

When asked whether Gonzalez's arrival meant more positive transfer news could follow before the window closes, Jaissle replied: "I have always believed in positive things, so I have never doubted it. We want to continue on this brave path rather than signing players who are almost ready to retire."

"Nico is a young player, but he also has a lot of experience. He has played many matches and can bring a high level of quality in possession, while also making an impact without the ball through his physical ability. I think this is a really great addition."

With the transfer window entering its final stages, Newcastle's priorities now appear to be strengthening the left-back and striker positions. Jaissle has made it clear that he will continue pushing the club to make further moves until the window closes.
