Inter Miami have appointed Cristian Kily González as their new head coach, replacing Guillermo Hoyos as the MLS club looks to end a difficult spell of results. González takes charge with the team currently on a five-match winless run across all competitions, including four defeats and one draw in the MLS regular season and Leagues Cup. However, despite the recent struggles, Inter Miami remain second in the Eastern Conference with 39 points from 21 matches. González will officially begin his duties once the necessary work permits are completed, with Hoyos temporarily remaining in charge until the new coach and his staff arrive.

González brings considerable playing and coaching experience to Miami. The Argentine previously managed Rosario Central, Unión Santa Fe and Platense, while his playing career included spells with Rosario Central, Valencia, Zaragoza and Inter Milan. His international career also saw him represent Argentina alongside current Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi, with the pair featuring together during two World Cup qualifiers in 2005. His familiarity with elite football and experience working within the Argentine game could prove valuable as Inter Miami attempt to regain consistency and make the most of their strong position in the Eastern Conference.

Hoyos leaves the position after initially taking over as interim manager following Javier Mascherano’s departure last April. He had previously worked as Inter Miami’s sporting director before being placed in charge, eventually earning the permanent role after the World Cup. His early period as manager was highly successful, with a 6-1-1 record through his first eight matches and 19 points collected from a possible 24. Inter Miami also scored 26 goals during that run, giving Hoyos the strongest start by an Inter Miami coach across the club’s first eight matches since entering MLS in 2020. Despite that impressive beginning, the team’s subsequent decline has ultimately led to another change in the dugout.

Inter Miami are also working to strengthen their squad, with negotiations advancing for Brazilian attacking midfielder Riquelme Fillipi from Palmeiras. The 19-year-old is reportedly close to moving to Miami in a deal that would give Inter Miami 60% of his playing rights for a fee estimated between $5.5 million and $6 million. His potential arrival would underline the club’s continued focus on adding young attacking talent alongside established stars. With González preparing to take over and further squad changes underway, Inter Miami are entering another important phase as they seek to turn their current momentum around and challenge strongly for honours.
