Montpellier have officially announced the signing of 29-year-old French right-back Alpha Sissoko on a free transfer. The defender has signed a three-year contract with the club, keeping him at Montpellier until June 2029.

Sissoko was born in Bondy, France, and has both French and Malian heritage. He began his football career in the Clermont youth academy before gradually breaking into the first team between 2017 and 2019, gaining valuable experience in French professional football. He subsequently played for Saint-Étienne, Le Puy and Quevilly-Rouen.

During his time at Saint-Étienne, Sissoko further developed his experience at the top level of French football. He returned to the club in 2020 and remained there until 2022. He then joined Quevilly-Rouen, where he gradually established himself as an important member of the team's defensive line.

In the summer of 2024, Sissoko moved to Guingamp, where he spent the next two full seasons. Last season, he faced Montpellier twice while representing Guingamp. Now, the two sides have switched from opponents to employers and player, with the right-back officially becoming a Montpellier player.

Primarily deployed as a right-back, Sissoko is known for his defensive approach while also possessing the ability to push forward and contribute offensively. Standing at 1.80 metres tall and weighing 76 kilograms, he offers a solid combination of physical strength, pace and defensive coverage.

More importantly, Sissoko has accumulated more than 150 appearances in Ligue 2. For Montpellier, who are currently competing in France's second tier, his extensive experience and familiarity with the league could make him a valuable immediate reinforcement.

Montpellier said the club had been looking for a new right-back after Enzo Tchato left to join Italian side Frosinone. The club ultimately opted for the experienced Sissoko to strengthen the position.

Speaking about his move to Montpellier, Sissoko said he was extremely proud to join a club of such stature and influence. He is eager to begin his new chapter and hopes to make a positive contribution while enjoying the experience on a personal level.

Sissoko also acknowledged that Montpellier have made a positive start to the new season, but stressed that Ligue 2 is highly competitive and that the team cannot afford to relax. In his view, Montpellier have the quality to achieve bigger objectives, and the club ultimately belongs in France's top flight.

Following the signing, Sissoko will wear the No. 58 shirt at Montpellier. The club will be hoping that the experienced right-back, with more than 150 Ligue 2 appearances under his belt, can use his experience and physical qualities to improve the team's defensive stability on the right flank.
