AC Milan reportedly made a late attempt to sign Giorgio Scalvini from Atalanta on deadline day as the club looked to strengthen its defensive options. The move was driven by new manager Ruben Amorim, who wanted another centre-back after deciding that Fikayo Tomori was no longer part of his preferred plans. Scalvini emerged as an attractive target because of his technical qualities, tactical intelligence and significant potential for further development.

Amorim was understood to be particularly impressed by Scalvini’s profile and believed the young Italian defender could fit naturally into the tactical system he wanted to establish at Milan. His age was another major factor, with the Rossoneri viewing him as a potential long-term asset rather than simply a short-term solution. Milan therefore moved quickly to explore the possibility of completing the deal before the transfer window closed.

However, Atalanta had no intention of letting Scalvini leave so late in the window. The club considered the defender an important part of its squad and would have faced major difficulties finding a suitable replacement at such short notice. Atalanta’s stance was reflected in a very high valuation for the player, making the proposed transfer increasingly difficult for Milan to pursue. With negotiations failing to progress, the Rossoneri eventually abandoned their efforts and ended the window without adding another central defender.

The failed move could also lead to an unexpected change in Tomori’s situation at San Siro. With Scalvini unavailable and no replacement secured, Amorim may reconsider his previous decision to leave the English defender out of the squad. Tomori could therefore be brought back into the manager’s plans as Milan look for greater depth and stability at the heart of their defence during the new season.
