Indonesia face a major defensive concern ahead of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 after captain Jay Idzes suffered a quadriceps injury while playing for Sassuolo against Juventus in Serie A. The injury is expected to keep him sidelined for around a month, making his participation in the tournament highly unlikely. The competition will be held in Jakarta and Bandung from September 25 to October 5, with Indonesia beginning their Group A campaign against Singapore at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on September 25.
With Idzes unavailable, Justin Hubner, Elkan Baggott, and Mathew Baker have emerged as potential options for John Herdman to consider. Hubner brings valuable international experience and strong club form, having established himself as a regular starter for Fortuna Sittard in the Eredivisie. The 23-year-old has started all six league matches this season and played the full 90 minutes in each game. He has also earned 18 senior caps for Indonesia and has already worked with Herdman during several international fixtures.
Baggott offers a different profile through his experience in English football and his physical presence at the back. Since completing a permanent move from Ipswich Town to Millwall in July 2026, the 23-year-old has featured in seven matches across all competitions, including five Championship games and two Carabao Cup appearances. His total of 314 minutes represents encouraging progress after a period in which regular first-team opportunities were difficult to secure, giving Indonesia another experienced defensive option.
Baker could provide a younger and more versatile alternative. The 17-year-old made his senior Indonesia debut against Oman in June 2026, becoming the youngest player to represent the national team at senior level. His ability to operate as a centre-back, left-back, or defensive midfielder could be particularly useful for Herdman when adjusting the defensive setup. With Idzes expected to miss the tournament, Indonesia now have three contrasting options who could help fill the leadership and defensive responsibilities left by their captain.
