Cristiano Ronaldo Delays Portugal Retirement as International Future Remains Open

    0 0

Cristiano Ronaldo has decided to continue his Portugal career after previously considering retirement following the World Cup. The veteran forward, who will turn 42 in February, is set to earn his 234th international cap against Wales in Lisbon, with head coach Jorge Jesus confirming that Ronaldo will start the Nations League fixture. The match takes place at Jose Alvalade Stadium, the home of Sporting, where his professional journey began.

Ronaldo acknowledged that retirement had been something he seriously considered, particularly after a World Cup where questions about his age and form became more prominent. However, discussions with Portugal’s president and coach helped convince him that he could still contribute to the national team. He believes his role extends beyond scoring goals, with his experience and influence also valuable to a younger generation of Portuguese players.

His position in the starting lineup had been questioned after a poll by Portuguese newspaper A Bola showed that readers did not select him in their preferred XI for the Wales match. Ronaldo has faced criticism throughout his long international career but remains determined to continue as long as he feels capable of making a meaningful contribution. Rather than setting a specific retirement date, he intends to make that decision based on his ability to help Portugal on and off the pitch.

Ronaldo, who currently plays for Al Nassr, has scored 979 career goals and is approaching the 1,000-goal milestone. Although he insists the figure is not an obsession, reaching the landmark while representing Portugal would carry particular significance for him. For now, his focus remains on maintaining his fitness, contributing to the national team and continuing to serve as an example for younger players before eventually bringing an extraordinary international career to an end.
