Inter Milan coach Cristian Chivu reportedly played an important role in keeping Hakan Calhanoglu at the club during the recent summer transfer window. Despite the Turkish midfielder having a contract that runs until June 2027, Chivu is understood to view him as a key part of his plans and wanted to avoid losing one of the most influential players in the squad.

Calhanoglu has become an important figure at Inter since arriving from AC Milan on a free transfer in 2021. His performances have established him as a central component of the team’s midfield, while his ability to dictate play and contribute in attacking situations has made him valuable to successive Inter coaches. Chivu reportedly quickly recognized the midfielder’s importance after taking charge and was keen to ensure that speculation surrounding his future did not develop into a serious transfer situation.

Interest from Turkey reportedly resurfaced during the summer, but the situation remained relatively calm compared with the previous year. Calhanoglu, who extended his Inter contract in 2023, is approaching the latter stages of his current deal and will turn 33 in February 2027. His age and recent injury record are among the factors Inter must consider as they evaluate his long-term future at the club.

Calciomercato reported that Calhanoglu suffered six separate injuries last season and currently earns around €6.5 million per year. Inter are therefore considering a possible adjustment to his salary as part of discussions over a new contract. Sporting director Dario Baccin has already indicated that the club has begun negotiations involving Calhanoglu, with Federico Dimarco and Carlos Augusto also among the players whose contractual situations are being discussed.
