Niclas Fullkrug Turns His Back on England After Frustrating West Ham Spell

    0 0

Niclas Fullkrug appears to have closed the door on a return to English football after a difficult spell with West Ham United. The German striker struggled to settle during his time in the Premier League and has made it clear that England is not a destination he wants to revisit during the next stage of his career.

Fullkrug joined West Ham from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2024 for a reported £27 million. His time at the London club failed to live up to expectations, with the forward managing just three goals in 29 appearances across all competitions. His struggles eventually led to a loan move to AC Milan during the January 2026 transfer window.

His spell in Italy also failed to provide the breakthrough he had hoped for, but a return to Werder Bremen has brought more encouraging signs. Now playing for the Bundesliga side on loan, the 33-year-old has begun to regain his scoring form. He has scored three goals in four starts, including a goal against RB Leipzig, giving him renewed confidence after a challenging period abroad.

Fullkrug has also reflected on the physical difficulties he experienced while playing in England. Although his injury problems were not primarily lined to muscle injuries, the striker believes the overall environment did not suit him as either a footballer or an athlete. His experience at West Ham has therefore left him reluctant to consider another move to the Premier League.

The situation remains complicated because Fullkrug is still under contract with West Ham until 2028. Selling him could prove difficult, particularly with his value affected by his age and recent performances. West Ham may therefore consider reaching a mutual agreement to end his contract next summer, potentially allowing Fullkrug to continue his career in Germany without the club having to wait for a conventional transfer.
